Parliament Budget session highlights: Lok Sabha adjourned till March 2

Parliament highlights: In the Lok Sabha, the Direct Tax Vivad Se Vishwas Bill, 2020, has been listed for passage. The Bill aims to provide for the resolution of disputed tax cases involving Rs 9.32 lakh crore.

Samajwadi Party patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav Tuesday asked the government when former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and sitting MP Farooq Abdullah would be released from the detention by J&K administration.

Raising the issue of Abdullah’s detention in Lok Sabha during the Question Hour, Yadav said, “Our colleague Farooq Abdullah used to sit with me. When will he come to the House?” However, Speaker Om Birla did not ask the government to reply to his question.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman Monday told the Lok Sabha that despite facing a slump in past six quarters, the economy will improve as the seven green shoots are giving positive indications. She also acknowledged the MPs who participated in the discussion of her Budget speech.

The BJP has issued a three-line whip to all its MPs in the Rajya Sabha asking them to be present in the House on Tuesday, ANI reported. The MPs have been told “some very important” legislative work will be brought to the House, discussed and passed. In the Lok Sabha, the Direct Tax Vivad Se Vishwas Bill, 2020, has been listed for passage.

Sitharaman hits back at Chidambaram, says nothing to learn from those who gave NPA crisis

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday hit back at former minister P Chidambaram for his 'incompetent doctors' attending to economy remark, saying there was nothing to learn from the people who gave the mountain of NPAs along with twin balance sheet crisis. Replying to the debate on her Budget for 2020-21 in Rajya Sabha, she said FDI "ran out of the country in 2012-13" under "competent doctors" overseeing the economy.

She said defence of India was paralysed and did not have equipment under the UPA.

No information on any group called ‘Tukde Tukde Gang’: Govt in Parliament

The Home Ministry on Tuesday said it has no information on any group called the ‘Tukde Tukde Gang’. Replying to a written question in Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Home G Kishan Reddy said the ministry has no information on whether the terminology ‘Tukde Tukde Gang’ is based on specific inputs provided by law enforcement agencies.

“No such information has been brought to the notice of the government by any law enforcement agency,” he said.

The reply came in response to questions by Congress members Vincent H Pala and Jasbir Singh Gill. Read more

SC order on reservation: BSP MP calls government anti-reservation

BSP MP Veer Singh said in Rajya Sabha today that central government is anti-reservation and is slowly trying to remove it from the country. He said the government is benefitting a few crony capitalists and is degrading the public sector by promoting the private sector. There are no jobs left in the public sector, he added. 

In its order on February 7, the Supreme Court had said that states are not bound to provide reservation in job promotions.

The first phase of the Parliament Budget session, that began on January 31, will conclude on Tuesday and will resume again from March 2 after a short recess.

Besides, the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order (Amendment) Bill, 2019, to modify the list of the Scheduled Tribes in Karnataka is also slated to be introduced in the Lok Sabha for consideration by Union minister Arjun Munda.

Criticising the government’s handling of the economy, Congress leader and former Finance Minister P Chidambaram on Monday said the economy is “perilously close to collapse” and that it was being attended to by “incompetent doctors”. Initiating the debate on the Budget in Rajya Sabha, Chidambaram said the government has “no money to spend” and alleged that it has “masked” the situation by numbers. He said the economy is now “demand-constrained” and “investment-starved”, but the government prefers to “live in denial”.

Meanwhile, Union Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Thaawarchand Gehlot Monday informed the Lok Sabha that the government was not a party in the Supreme Court which has ordered that states are not bound to provide reservation in job promotions. Gehlot said the top court's order pertains to a decision of the Uttarakhand government taken in 2012 when the Congress was in power in the state. This led to protests by Congress members who walked out of proceedings.
