A day after shots were fired at his vehicle while he was returning to New Delhi from a poll campaign in Uttar Pradesh, AIMIM leader and Lok Sabha member Asaduddin Owaisi said he did not want the Z-category security cover offered to him by the government.

On Friday, the Ministry of Home Affairs granted Z-category CRPF security cover to Owaisi. His security detail, sources said, would have six-eight armed commandos accompanying him on his travels, apart from the security personnel at his residence.

But speaking in Lok Sabha, Owaisi said he did not want the Z-category security cover and would prefer to be an “A-category citizen”.

The government said it had taken serious note of the Thursday incident and Union Home Minister Amit Shah would be making a statement in Lok Sabha on Monday.

“I don’t want Z-category security. Make me an A-category citizen at par with you all. I am not going to be silent… Why was UAPA not invoked against those who fired at me? I don’t want security, but you apply UAPA against them,” Owaisi said while speaking about the attack on him at a toll plaza in UP.

“I want to live, speak. I have to raise my voice to live. My life will be safe when the poor are safe. If the Constitution provides security to the poor, the weaker and the minorities, I will also be safe. I know there will be death for each one of us. I will not get scared of those who shot at my car… But this hatred has to be stopped,” he said.

He said he had warned in 2017 that “if the plurality of the country is not respected and the right wing captures everything, such elements will get emboldened. Why are you not banning them? Why are you not doing anything to stop them from getting radicalised?”. Referring to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s speech in which he referred to “two Indias”, Owaisi said: “The wealth of this country is love and affection, but hatred is taking over.”

He said Speaker Om Birla had called him immediately after the incident and inquired about him.

IUML’s E T Muhammed Basheer backed Owaisi and urged the government to take action.

Responding to Owaisi’s remarks, Union Minister Piyush Goyal said: “It’s a serious matter. We thank God that he is safe and we wish him a long life. The Uttar Pradesh government has already taken action and arrested the culprits. The probe is on and the Home Minister will make a detailed statement on Monday.”

Meanwhile, a senior official said that following the attack on Owaisi’s convoy and a threat perception report from the Intelligence Bureau, the government decided to accord him the second highest category of security cover. An order would soon reach the CRPF, the official said.

Owaisi, whose party is contesting 100 Assembly seats in UP, had a close call Thursday when shots were fired at the vehicle he was travelling in while returning to Delhi from Meerut after campaigning. The state police arrested two persons in connection with the incident and also recovered a weapon used in the attack.
