Amid protests from the BJP, AIMIM chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi said there was nothing wrong with chanting “Jai Palestine” in Parliament and that it was not against any rule or provision of the Constitution.

“I said ‘Jai Bheem, Jai Meem, Jai Telangana, Jai Filisteen (Palestine)’. What provision of the Constitution does it violate? It is their (BJP MPs) to oppose,” Owaisi said while talking to reporters outside Lok Sabha.

When asked what his intentions were behind the slogan, Owaisi said Palestinians were an “oppressed people”. “Read what Mahatma Gandhi had said about Palestine,” he said.

In Lok Sabha when Owaisi was called to take oath, there were chants of “Jai Shri Ram” from the Treasury benches. “You all know what they were saying,” Owaisi said outside Lok Sabha.

While the chair, Radha Mohan Singh, and pro-tem Speaker Bhatruhari Mahtab said only the oath would go on record, there were complaints made to Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju. “We do not have any enmity with Palestine…the only issue is, while taking oath, is it proper for any member to raise the slogan praising another country? We will have to check rules,” PTI quoted Rijiju as saying.
