Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on Sunday said the Northeast experiences a high incidence of oral cancer.

“In the Northeast, the tendency of getting oral cancer is high. If we see any abnormal growth, we need to consult a doctor immediately. If the diagnosis is done late, problems may arise during treatment as well,” said Saha while attending a program to mark the World Cancer Day at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Regional Cancer Centre in Agartala (ABVRCC).

Later, Saha informed that the state government has allocated 15 acre free of cost to the Silchar-based Cancer Research Centre to set up a cancer hospital in North Tripura district.

The state cabinet approved the proposal of allocating the land in its last meeting, he added.

“n Tripura, North and Unakoti districts have a high prevalence of cancer. If a cancer hospital is built in the North district, patients from both North and Unakoti districts would benefit,” he said.

Saha said the ABVRCC is one of the best cancer hospitals in the Northeast and added that his government would take the initiative to upgrade the centre.

“Our government has been working sincerely towards strengthening the cancer treatment service in the state. This disease can be prevented through generating mass awareness,” Saha wrote on his social media handle after the program.
