Community leaders have, however, denied the allegation. According to a community leader, Bijay went to the social function uninvited and may have been asked to leave because of that.
Police in Odisha’s Ganjam district booked nine people for allegedly ostracising the family of an Odisha Administrative Service (OAS) officer after he married a woman from outside his caste.
Police intervened in the matter after Bijay Behera, father of Saudagar Behera, who has been serving as Additional Tehsildar of Aska in Ganjam district, lodged a police complaint on Friday, alleging that his family was being socially boycotted by members of their community after his son’s marriage outside their caste.
Saudagar married a woman outside his Kaibarta community in February this year. Recently, when his father, Bijay, attended a social function of the community, he was allegedly asked to leave the venue, and the plate of food he was holding was taken away, he said.
“After my son’s marriage outside the caste…, community leaders asked me to ostracise the couple from my family, but I refused. [Later] I was humiliated, due to which I lodged a complaint with police,” said Bijay.
Police said they have registered a case and have been engaging with both the parties — the man who was allegedly humiliated and leaders of the community — to resolve the matter amicably.
Community leaders have, however, denied the allegation. According to a community leader, Bijay went to the social function uninvited and may have been asked to leave because of that.
Ganjam SP Suvendu Kumar Patra told The Indian Express, “We had called both the parties to the police station, where they said that the differences between them have been sorted out and they don’t want to proceed with the case.”
The OAS officer could not be reached for a comment on the issue.
