Training his guns on the Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party national president and Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda said Friday that those who once “destroyed the Constitution” are now pretending to be its “protector”.

Addressing Odisha BJP’s first executive meeting since the party assumed power in the state, Nadda called the Congress a “parasite” that cannot stand on its own but relies on the strength of others.

Referring to the period of the Emergency, Nadda said: “The Congress these days pretends to be the guardian of the Constitution, but its actions suggest otherwise. It isn’t a ‘rakshak’ (protector), but ‘bhakshak’ (exploiter) of the Constitution. They have harmed the Constitution multiple times”.

He also took a dig at Congress leader and Rae Bareli MP Rahul Gandhi, wondering if he knew the “karname” (misdeeds) of his grandmother, former prime minister Indira Gandhi. “Do you know why the Emergency was proclaimed? Because the Allahabad High Court had declared her election as null and void. The court had said that she can’t fight election for six years. Therefore, they had changed the law at that time and the constitution was harmed.”

The minister also took a swipe at Congress’s INDIA allies, among them Rashtriya Janata Dal Chief Lalu Prasad Yadav. Lalu, he said, named his MP-daughter Misa (Bharti) because she was born at a time when he was in jail during the Emergency under the now-repealed Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA).

“He (Lalu) now praises Rahul Gandhi, whose grandmother had jailed him for around 22 months under MISA,” said Nadda. “Many senior leaders — including Biju Babu (Biju Patnaik) — were imprisoned during the Emergency. The Congress government at the Centre dismissed 90 state governments.”

Talking about the state’s Mohan Majhi government, Nadda said the party and the BJP government will do everything it can to “bring the state’s tribals, Dalits and downtrodden back into the mainstream”.

The meeting saw BJP leaders deliberate on the best ways to strengthen coordination between government and the organisation and fulfil the electoral promises made by the BJP. According to leaders, Saturday will see the party draw up a roadmap to “remain in power for the next 25 years”.
