Mumbai suburban railway: ICF to develop 2 non-AC local trains equipped with automatic door closure system

Mumbai suburban railway, Mumbai suburban rail network: Indian Railways (IR) has undertaken several initiatives to enhance train connectivity across the Mumbai suburban network. As part of these efforts, the national transporter operates more than 3,000 local trains, including AC services, to meet the daily travel requirements of commuters. The Mumbai suburban network is managed by two railway zones Central Railway (CR) and Western Railway (WR).

In the ongoing Parliament session, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that the national transporter will develop two Non-AC local trainsets equipped with an Automatic Door Closure system. These rakes will be manufactured by Chennai-based Integral Coach Factory (ICF).

“A decision has been taken for development of two Non-AC EMU rakes with Automatic Doors Closure mechanism, by ICF, Chennai,” the Union Minister said in a written statement on December 3. He was responding to questions raised by Lok Sabha MPs Prof Varsha Eknath Gaikwad and Sanjay Dina Patil.

The minister further added that these EMU rakes shall have Automatic Doors, Vestibules, Roof Mounted Ventilation Unit and Doors with Louvers for air circulation.

Local trains with automatic door closure system

Currently, 17 rakes of AC EMUs with Automatic Door Closure System are operating on Mumbai Suburban Network. Apart from this, the Ministry of Railways has also sanctioned 238 rakes of 12 coaches each for deployment across the Mumbai suburban rail network. “Also, a total of 238 rakes of 12 cars have been sanctioned under MUTP-III & IIIA at a cost of ₹19,293 crore. The process for procurement of these rakes has been taken up,” the minister said.

In addition, it also sanctioned remodelling works in connection with increase in number of coaches from 12 to 15 on suburban trains for CSMT – Kalyan Section of Central Railway.
