Prime Minister Narendra Modi Monday met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and reiterated India’s support for “early resolution of the conflict in Ukraine and restoration of peace and stability”.
Zelenskyy said that India and Ukraine are “actively developing” their relations and “working together to strengthen cooperation”. Post his meeting with PM Modi, Zelenskyy said in a post on X: “I am grateful for the clear support of our sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
Modi met Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the UN’s Summit of the Future. This was their third bilateral meeting this year.
What the leaders discussed
On early Tuesday, PM Modi said in a post on X, “Met President @ZelenskyyUa in New York. We are committed to implementing the outcomes of my visit to Ukraine last month to strengthen bilateral relations.”
“Reiterated India’s support for early resolution of the conflict in Ukraine and restoration of peace and stability,” he added.
Zelenskyy, on his part, added, “The main focus of our conversation was on enhancing our interaction on international platforms, particularly at the UN and G20, as well as implementing the Peace Formula and preparing for the second Peace Summit.”
According to a press release from the Prime Minister’s Office, the two leaders “expressed satisfaction” over PM Modi’s recent visit to Ukraine. “The situation in Ukraine as well as the way forward on pursuing a path to peace also figured prominently in their discussions,” it said.
“Prime Minister reiterated India’s clear, consistent and constructive approach in favour of a peaceful resolution of the conflict through diplomacy and dialogue as well as engagement between all stakeholders. He conveyed that India remains open to provide all support within its means to facilitate a lasting and peaceful resolution of the conflict,” the statement read.
Modi’s bilateral meets
PM Modi visited Kyiv on August 23, when Zelenskyy proposed India as the site of a peace summit amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. The visit came shortly after PM Modi held talks with President Vladimir Putin in Moscow in July. “… I can tell the international community that India is on the side of peace and was ready to contribute in ending the conflict in Ukraine. And I can say that after listening to President Putin, I have hope,” Modi had said after their meeting.
The Prime Minister held several bilateral meetings during his three-day visit to the United States, which concluded Tuesday. A day earlier, he had reaffirmed India’s support for the people of Palestine when he met their President Mahmoud Abbas amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.
Finding a way forward
According to Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, PM Modi’s meeting with Zelenskyy “demonstrates” his “commitment to finding a way forward and to contributing in any way possible to a resolution of this conflict”, news agency PTI reported.
“I think the prime minister’s meeting with President Zelenskyy also reflects his own, in a sense, commitment to this effort because he is deeply concerned by this conflict, not just in terms of the human toll that it is taking — something that he has recognised — but also in terms of the toll that it is taking on the world at large, especially on countries in the Global South,” Misri told reporters after the conclusion of PM Modi’s US visit.
Speaking about the peace summit, Misri said, “I think we are not right now at a stage where the second peace summit can be discussed in any detail. I think there is a lot of work that remains to be done before that, so there was not a great deal of discussion on that specific issue.”
