Anupriya Patel, the Apna Dal MP from Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh, is among the new ministers in Narendra Modi council of ministers.
The daughter of party founder Sone Lal Patel, she has been veering the Uttar Pradesh party towards the BJP in the run up to the elections. There is widespread speculation that the party will merge with the BJP before the elections.
An eastern UP outfit, Apna Dal has its base among Kurmis, among the largest groups of OBCs in the state. This is why Anupriya is crucial to BJP’s plans for UP.
Anupriya has been entangled in a court battle with mother and party chief Krishna Patel over control of the Apna Dal. In 2014, she claimed to have expelled Anupriya from the party, leading to creation of two factions.
Patel studied in Delhi’s Lady Shri Ram College for Women as well as Amity University and Kanpur University. The 35-year-old has a Master’s degrees in Psychology and an MBA.
