A senior Meghalaya Police officer informed that they got a tip-off about a group of suspected Bangladeshi infiltrators traveling from Guwahati to Shillong on February 14. Thereafter, five persons, including four adults and a minor, were detained at Nongpoh Check Post under the Ri Bhoi district.
During interrogation, the detainees reportedly claimed to be Indian citizens and produced Aadhaar and PAN cards, but later confessed that they entered the country with the help of a smuggling racket.
The detainees also admitted that they had travelled to Mumbai in search of jobs and said they were going back to Bangladesh.
The accused persons also confessed to having secured fake Indian identity cards through contacts in Mumbai.
The Meghalaya Police officer, who didn’t wish to be named, informed that further investigation revealed that a racket in Mumbai opened bank accounts under fake identities of illegal immigrants and used them for loan frauds and cybercrimes.
A Special Investigation Team from Meghalaya, led by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Ashu Pant, was dispatched to Mumbai. The team reached Mumbai and held a series of raids across Navi Mumbai and south Mumbai over a week, in coordination with the Mumbai police.
These raids led to the seizure of forged documents, digital evidence, and different equipment used for fabricating identity cards. Three persons – Nusrat A Kazi, Jabir Yunus Shaikh, and Shaikh Mohd Mujib – were also arrested in south Mumbai.
The accused persons are being brought to Meghalaya.
