Meghalaya Honeymoon Murder Case Latest News: The Uttar Pradesh Police said Tuesday that Sonam Raghuvanshi, the prime suspect in the murder of her newlywed husband Raja Raghuvanshi and who was found at a roadside eatery in the state’s Ghazipur district, has claimed she does not know how she reached Ghazipur as she had been drugged.
Raja, 28, and Sonam, who belong to Indore in Madhya Pradesh, were reported missing in May during their honeymoon in Meghalaya, and his body was found earlier this month. A week after Raja Raghuvanshi’s body was found along with a murder weapon, the police arrested three men from Madhya Pradesh, and Sonam surrendered.
On Monday, the Madhya Pradesh Police’s Crime Branch told The Indian Express that they suspected Raj Kushwaha of having orchestrated Raja’s murder, allegedly with Sonam’s help. They said Kushwaha, 21, planned Raja’s murder just days after the couple got married.
The police said they are now collecting CCTV footage from the area around the eatery, from where Sonam, 24, called her family early Monday. After getting information, a police team rushed and caught her.
“The woman claimed she had no idea how she ended up at the dhaba in Ghazipur, and did not know who had brought her there. The police checked the footage of the CCTV installed close to the dhaba to verify her claim,” said a senior police officer.
The officer added that locals and the dhaba owner said the woman had come there alone, and was conscious.
Sources said that, so far, the police have found no evidence to suggest that anyone else brought her to the dhaba.
Amitabh Yash, Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order), said the UP Police would extend all possible assistance to their Meghalaya counterparts, if requested.
According to the police, Sonam Raghuvanshi arrived at Kashi Dhaba in the Nandganj area of Ghazipur at around 2.30 am Monday, and asked the owner for a phone to call her family in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. She told the owner that she had a fever and wanted to inform her family.
Sonam then made a video call to her cousin and told him she was at a dhaba in Ghazipur. After the call, her cousin quickly informed the Indore police, who passed the message to their counterparts in UP. The UP Police then rushed to the location.
Meanwhile, sensing something unusual, the owner also called the police control room to report her presence. A team from the Nandganj Police Station in Ghazipur immediately reached the spot.
Sonam Raghuvanshi revealed her identity to the police but declined to share any further details. After she said she was suffering from a fever, the police took her to a hospital for a medical check-up. She was later shifted to a one-stop centre, a facility that offers temporary shelter and support to women affected by violence.
In the afternoon, a team from the Meghalaya Police arrived in Ghazipur, approached the court, and obtained a three-day transit remand.
