Police in Rajasthan’s Dungarpur have lodged an FIR against seven students for ragging after a first-year medical student suffered an infection in his liver and kidney and had to undergo dialysis due to injuries from alleged excessive ragging, officials said.
The 20-year-old student told police that he and about 50-70 other first-year medical students at Government Medical College, Dungarpur were taken to a hill about one and a half kilometers from the college last month. At the hill, they were allegedly ragged by seniors.
The student’s father said that the alleged incident took place on the evening of May 15. Terming it an “inhuman act”, he said that the students were taken to the hill with the temperature touching 48 degrees Celsius and once there, the seniors made his son do 300-350 sit-ups while some others had to do even more.
He said that due to the intense strain, his son’s muscles were damaged, which led to infection in the kidney and liver. “He didn’t tell us anything about the ragging, but when he complained about pain, we had some tests conducted, first on May 18, and then again on May 22,” the father told The Indian Express.
When the test results flagged issues, the family rushed him to a hospital in Ahmedabad on May 22 following a recommendation by doctors.
“The doctors said that we brought him just in time and any further delay could have been dangerous,” the father said. At the hospital, the student was admitted for nine days beginning May 22 and almost a month and a half later, has recovered, after undergoing dialysis four times.
On the delay between the alleged ragging and the complaint to the National Medical Commission (NMC), the father said that the family came to know about it later, only through the doctors. Moreover, the student didn’t want his exams, which were completed only on June 26, to be disturbed because of the complaint.
GMC principal Dr Balamuruganvelu S said they received a complaint via the NMC website. “We formed a committee within 24 hours and investigated (the case). We suspended seven students who were involved in the ragging and also lodged an FIR at the local police station.”
Girdhari Singh, SHO of Dungarpur’s Sadar police station, said the police have recorded the statements of five students who were allegedly ragged. As for action against the seven accused, he said that the investigation is still on.
He said that the FIR was lodged on June 24, following a complaint given by the college administration, under IPC sections 143 (unlawful assembly), 147 (rioting), 149 (member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 341 (wrongful restraint) and 352 (punishment for assault or criminal force otherwise than on grave provocation).
