A 24-year-old student from Tripura died 18 days after he was allegedly stabbed by a group of five men following a scuffle in Uttarakhand’s Dehradun, police said.
The victim, Anjel Chakma, an MBA student at a private university in the capital, was assaulted and stabbed on December 9. The accused allegedly hurled racial slurs at Anjel and his brother, Michael Chakma, before unleashing violence.
While Michael suffered a head injury, Anjel succumbed to his injuries on Friday morning. The five accused were arrested on December 14 after an FIR was registered at Selaqui police station under sections of attempted murder. Following Anjel’s death, the murder section under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita has been added.
The accused — Avinash Negi, Shaurya Rajput, Suraj Khwas, Sumit, and Ayush Badoni — are currently in judicial custody, senior sub-inspector Jitender Kumar said.
The complaint was filed by Michael on December 10. Between 6 and 7 pm on December 9, the complainant and his brother, who are from Unakoti district in Tripura, had gone out to purchase some items. “At that time, some unknown persons, who were intoxicated with alcohol, misbehaved with the complainant and his brother and began using casteist and racist abusive words against the complainant. When the complainant and his brother objected to this behaviour, the accused attacked them with a knife and a metal bangle/bracelet (kada),” the complaint reads.
The accused allegedly struck Michael on the head with the kada. When Anjel stepped in to stop the assault, the assailants allegedly stabbed him in the abdomen and head. He was admitted in a critical condition to Graphic Era Hospital.
The complaint further states that the accused threatened the brothers, warning that they would kill them if the incident was reported to the police.

The brothers were living alone and had allegedly expressed apprehension that the accused might follow them to their house and kill them.
The five accused were arrested five days after the incident.
“During the interrogation, the accused revealed that an argument had broken out between them and the complainant and his brother while purchasing liquor from a liquor shop in Selaqui. Following this dispute, the accused attacked the complainant’s brother with a sharp-edged weapon, causing serious injuries,” the police said.
