Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Thursday informed the Assembly that 10,023 FIRs were registered in connection with the ongoing sectarian violence in the state. Of these, 38 cases were handed over to the CBI, and 13 to the NIA. He added that arrests were made in 495 cases.
The chief minister made the statement while presenting a report in the House.
He further said that 2,80,582 people were detained under the Preventive Detention Act. However, many were released as no evidence was found to prove their involvement in the crimes.
Biren Singh also told the House that a fact-finding committee comprising nearly 60 members has been constituted by the Union Home Ministry to ascertain the root cause of the violence.
Of the total weapons looted from the armory of security forces, 1,757 weapons and 22,707 ammunition were recovered till date, the CM said, adding that additional forces were being deployed in vulnerable areas.
Singh asserted that the violence that started last year has scaled down gradually with the support of people and security measures.
“Those responsible for inciting violence will not be spared,” he added.
