A video of a man shooting dead a dog in Jharkhand’s Ranchi has caused outrage, prompting police to arrest the suspect and register a case.

According to the police, the incident is from Tuesday morning and has been captured on a video that has since been circulating on social media. The clip purportedly shows three men casually ambling – one with a rifle in his hand – on the road. The man holding the rifle fires two shots at a dog, after which the animal lay motionless on the road.

The video caused outrage on social media, with users demanding action.

The police said the suspect, identified as Pradeep Pandey from Ranchi’s Tatisilwai — now arrested — had used a licenced rifle.

The suspect has admitted to killing the dog “due to its aggressive nature”, SHO Ranjeet Kumar Sinha told The Indian Express. “The case has been registered under Section 325 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) for animal cruelty, and since the shots were fired in a public area, relevant sections of the Arms Act have also been invoked,” he said.
