A SPECIAL court granted exemption to Bhopal MP Pragya Singh Thakur, an accused in the 2008 Malegaon blast case, from appearing before it on Saturday following a plea by her advocates that while she was willing to appear, they had advised her against it as the judge was on leave.

Last month, the special court had passed an order directing all the accused to remain present before it at least once a week. While Thakur appeared before the court Friday last week, her advocates this week filed exemption applications daily from Monday to Friday on grounds including her ill-health. The court had allowed the pleas.

Advocate J P Mishra, representing Thakur, told the court that she had planned to appear before the court on the last working day of the week on Saturday. Mishra said Thakur planned to come to Mumbai on Saturday and leave for Delhi to attend the first Lok Sabha session, which is set to begin on June 17. Mishra submitted that as the court was not expected to sit on Saturday as the judge was to take leave, he had advised her to not come before it. The hearing in the case will resume on Monday.
