The Shiv Sena has taken umbrage at the All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) opposition to Maharashtra government’s decision to allot public land for a memorial of senior BJP leader Gopinath Munde in Aurangabad. The party has said that the AIMIM should first demolish illegal mosques before making such statements.
“There is no need for them to meddle their nose when it comes to issues pertaining to the state’s iconic figures. They should first demolish illegal mosques and utter Vande Mataram before spouting sermons here,” an editorial in the party mouth piece Saamana said.
AIMIM MLA Imtiyaz Jaleel had opposed the Maharashtra government’s decision to allot public land for a memorial of senior BJP leader Gopinath Munde in Aurangabad. It had sought the construction of a hospital instead which said should be named after Munde.
“There are thousands of Mosques and Dargahs in Maharashtra which have come up illegally on government land and creating hurdles in development work. Will the AIMIM speak about the need to demolish these structures,” the edit says.
The edit also claimed that the MIM was hypocritical as it has opposed memorials for Shivaji, Bal Thackeray and Gopinath Munde but had not uttered a word about Babasaheb Ambedkar’s memorial.
The MIM has been trying to strike roots and win support from within the Dalit community. It has been trying to flex its political muscle in the state after emerging as the main political opposition to the BJP-Shiv Sena in Auranagabad Municipal Corporation by winning 25 seats. Five of its 25 corporators are Dalits.
