With the BJP emerging as the single largest party in Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis, 44, president of the state BJP, is awaiting further instructions from the central leadership. Amid the celebrations at the party office, he spoke to The Indian Express:
How do you view the results?
The BJP will form the government in Maharashtra. It has emerged as the No. 1 party in the state… It is a big gain… As the state BJP president, I was entrusted with the task of leading the campaign… I am happy it has yielded good results.
What about the next chief minister?
The next chief minister will be from the BJP. The BJP has emerged as the single largest party in the multi-cornered contest in state.
Are you in the race for the chief minister’s post? Who will be the next CM?
As I said, the next chief minister will be from the BJP. The final decision on formation of government and other related aspects, including the CM candidate, will be taken by the party’s parliamentary board. Our central leaders in Delhi will take the decision. I cannot comment on issues which are under the consideration and jurisdiction of the central leadership.
NCP has extended support to the BJP.
We will take a decision only after discussing the issue with the central leadership. Let us analyse the results and then evolve the strategy… Just wait a while. Aap thoda sa intezaar kijiye. Aagey dekhiye hota hain kya.
What about relations with the Shiv Sena?
As I have often said, the Sena is not our enemy. The Sena-BJP alliance split because of differences over seat-sharing… The idea was to accommodate the smaller allies.
