The local crime branch in Palghar district on Saturday arrested four persons who were allegedly transporting beef.
The action was taken after a forensic report confirmed the meat was beef.
Acting on a tip-off, sub inspector Ashish Patil and his team stopped a truck on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway near Charoti toll naka in jurisdiction of Kasa police station on Wednesday.
About 2 tonnes of meat was being carried in a truck with registration number plate of Tamil Nadu.
“A medical officer took 1 kg of samples from the meat and we sent it to the forensic lab in Kalina. On Friday night a report was received that it was banned meat, after which an FIR was registered on Saturday and the accused were subsequently arrested.”
The meat was worth Rs 20 lakh. The police will destroy it after permission from the court.
The police said the accused were carrying e-pass to transport the beef, but the permission was for water buffalo meat. Hence, the police added forgery sections as well.
