Thirteen people were arrested Monday on charges of indulging in arson and violence, a day after clashes broke out in Madhya Pradesh’s Mhow town in Indore district amid celebrations of the Indian cricket team’s victory in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, news agency PTI reported.

An FIR has been registered in the matter, Indore collector Ashish Singh told PTI. Action under the stringent National Security Act (NSA) will also be taken against some of them, he said.

According to locals, a group of young cricket enthusiasts was allegedly pelted with stones when they approached the Jama Masjid area with their rally celebrating the country’s victory against New Zealand last night.

The situation is now under control, and forces have been deployed in the affected areas to prevent further violence, the collector said. After a probe, it will be clear and who all are responsible for it, the official told the news agency.

What happened in Mhow on Sunday?

Deputy Inspector General of Police Nimish Agarwal, speaking to PTI, said: “A rally was being taken out in Mhow to celebrate India’s Champions Trophy victory.” During the rally, some people had an altercation that escalated into the two parties pelting each other with stones, he added.

As per the initial reports, the procession was taken out from different areas, when one of the groups engaged in a dispute with others over bursting of firecrackers, the district collector said.

A large group of individuals allegedly began hurling stones at those approaching the Masjid area, leading to chaos and forcing them to abandon their motorcycles and flee, the locals elaborated.

Incidents of arson also took place, with several vehicles being torched and vandalised, as per an ANI report, leading to panic in the town.

Four persons suffered injuries in the incident, Singh told the reporters. According to police, there were five incidents of violence in different areas of the town, located in the district, and three cars and several motorcycles were attacked and set afire, PTI quoted.

While local authorities were swiftly moved to action, the collector said, “How it happened will be ascertained later.” “Peace is restored in the area at present. Nobody will be spared and stringent action will be taken against those responsible for it (violence),” he said.

Action taken

According to PTI, the Superintendent of Police (Indore Rural) Hitika Wasal reached Mhow to assess the circumstances firsthand and take necessary measures to restore law and order.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Agarwal said forces reached the spot after receiving information about the clashes and brought the situation under control.

Some additional FIRs will also be registered in connection with the incidents on the basis of people’s statements, the district collector said, adding that some videos related to the incidents have also surfaced.

The collector has appealed to the people not to spread rumours or messages on social media and warned of action against those indulging in such acts, as per the PTI report.

Probe on

Meanwhile, Mhow police station in-charge Rahul Sharma informed PTI that three cars and a dozen two-wheelers were attacked and set ablaze.

The police were investigating all five incidents — in Taal Mohalla, Sewa Marg, Patti Bazar, Manek Chowk and Jama Masjid areas, he said.

The entire CCTV footage and videos shot by people on mobile phones were being examined to identify those who indulged in the arson, vandalism and stone-pelting, the official added.
