Ludhiana: Second ‘sacrilege’ incident in city in a year; six ragpickers held

Police said the CCTV footage of the area showed the suspects throwing torn pages on both sides of the road. He said all of them were illiterates and hence had no idea of what was written on the pages.

Hours after torn pages of Japuji Sahib and Hanuman Chalisa were found in Chander Nagar in Ludhiana Friday morning leading to tension in the area, the police arrested six suspects, all of them rag-pickers, in connection with the incident. This is the second such ‘incident of sacrilege’ in this area of the city. Last year, torn pages of Ramayana and Gita were found in the same area. Later, it turned out a that few rag-pickers had thrown these pages by mistake.

Earlier on Friday, police had registered an FIR against seven persons for hurting religious sentiments. The seventh suspect is still at large.

The suspects, all of them slum-dwellers from Kundanpuri area, have been identified as Farman Ali, Niyaz, Kali, Achhu, Giyani, Daba and Fizan. All except Niyaz have been arrested. All seven are minor in the age group of 12-14 years and are said to be drug addicts.

On Friday morning, the torn pages were found strewn on both sides of the road leading to Malhi Palace in Chander Nagar. Morning walkers who saw it called local councillor Narinder Malhi.

As the news spread, residents of Preetam Nagar, Chander Nagar and office-bearers of the local Gurdwara management also gathered.

After being informed, ACP Rattan Singh Brar reached the spot with police force. Finally, the residents decided to immerse the pages in canal water near Katani Kalan Gurdwara.
