Reacting to his X (formerly Twitter) account being withheld, Dr Cyriac Aby Philips, a Kerala-based hepatologist popularly known as The Liver Doc online, told The Indian Express he will challenge the order in a higher court.

A civil court in Bengaluru has issued a temporary injunction against Philips against communicating messages on his social media handle against products of the Himalaya Wellness Company.

The ex parte temporary injunction restrained him from posting or publishing defamatory remarks against the company and also ordered the social media service to block his social media handle.

Philips told The Indian Express he has been highlighting everything from a scientific point of view and based on his conversations with patients. “I got the samples of these (the company’s) products tested from a third party independent lab, which are government and regulator approved… I have posted all the reports on my Twitter handle. Everything was done as per standard protocol and scientific methodology…,” he claimed.

“I will definitely challenge this in the higher court because this is not the way we deal with scientific studies and debates. I was not a party to the hearing and was never called for the hearing and never knew this thing was happening in the first place. I got to know when the order came out and that too from Twitter, not even from the court,” he said.

Advocate Vivek Holla and Advocate Raunak Chabbaria who appeared on behalf of Himalaya Wellness said that the statements made by Phillips are false and unjustified. The advocates claimed that the intention of the statements is to push products of other companies. Advocate Raunak added that Phillips, with a vindictive agenda, tarnished the image and stellar reputation of the company.

Dr Philips is a specialist in hepatology and liver transplant medicine based in Kerala. On social media, he is known for discussing medical misinformation and creating awareness about evidence-based modern medical practices.

Through his account, Dr Philips talks about alternative medicine practices, which he says are based on pseudoscience and can be dangerous for health. His critical views on ayurveda, homeopathy and other alternative medicine systems on social media platforms have also dragged him in several controversies, including with The Kerala State Medical Council, which served him a notice for defaming Indian Systems of Medicine.

The medical council later dropped the charges.
