Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav, who was on a dharna to protest spiralling prices of food items, was on Tuesday taken into preventive custody even as police lathi-charged protesting party workers here.
Yadav was detained when he was sitting on a dharna at the city’s main Hazratganj crossing, police said. Samajwadi Party had called for a protest against price rise at all district headquarters for today.
Samajwadi Party workers also clashed with police which prevented them from taking out a march to the district magistrate’s office as part of their protest, they said. Police then baton-charged them.
Several SP workers, including women, were injured in the lathicharge.
Yadav was taken to police lines in a bus.
Earlier addressing party workers before his arrest,Yadav lashed out at the state government for resorting to lathicharge on innocent party workers.
“We have not resorted to any kind of violence that police should resort to lathicharge,” Yadav said, adding that police was suppressing the voice against price rise and corruption.
The massive support to our agitation has proved that our protest is for the right cause and has been successful,he added.
Official sources said Yadav was taken into custody for violating prohibitory orders under Section 144 CrPC.
“Its not fair to lathicharge people like this. We have not done anything wrong as we were protesting peacefully. We want an explanation as to why our workers were lathicharged,” the SP chief demanded.
