The government does not believe in taking harsh measures against Maoists in its bid to solve the Naxal menace in a haste,Union Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal on Wednesday said.
“The Centre can solve the Maoist problem within a fortnight,but by taking harsh measure it does not want to turn the problem into terrorism,” the Union Minister of State for Coal told reporters here.
He said a solution to the problem could be reached through cooperation with the state and central governments,he said.
Noting that the rebels spread their influence due to non-development,he said leaders of different political parties were also to be blamed for the present situation.
The Centre could only provide central forces,modern weapons,funds for improving the conditions of police stations and officers but deployment of forces and safety of firearms was the prerogative of the state government,he said.
Referring to the ensuing Bihar assembly elections,Jaiswal said Congress was witnessing a surge in its popularity in the state as people wanted to get rid of Nitish Kumar Government.
He claimed that the people were looking towards Congress as a viable alternative.
Jaiswal will tour the districts of Siwan,Saran,Gopalganj and East Champaran and address party workers during his two day stay in the state.
