The wife of Narayan Sai – an accused in a sexual assault case in Surat – has told the police that her marriage with Sai broke because she refused to adopt an illegitimate child born to Sai and his disciple Jamna, police sources said on Wednesday.

Sai’s wife,Janki had reached Surat with her lawyer, after getting summons from Surat police,in connection with the case. She had come to the city from Indore (Madhya Pradesh),where she is currently residing.

During her six-hour-long interrogation by officials of the Special Investigation team comprising of DCP Shobha Bhutada,ACP Mukesh Patel and others,Janki told the police that her marriage with Sai failed because of her husband’s relationship with his discipline and trusted loyalist,Jamna.

She told the police a body was born to Sai and Jamna in October 2007. When Janki refused to accept the child,Sai’s followers Ganga and her husband Pramod Mishra had alleged adopted the kid.

According to police sources,Janki had married Narayan Sai — son of the controversial God-man Asaram Bapu — in 1997 and started staying with him at different ashrams. Their relationship turned sour after Sai came in contact with Jamna.

Janki told police that after she learnt of Sai’s relationship with Jamna, their marriage collapsed. This,in spite of her trying to convince her husband to mend his ways and even complaining to his father Asaram Bapu and wife.

According to Janki’s statements, both Asaram and his wife pacified her by saying that Narayan Sai will change in due course of time and asked her to remain silent for sometime. However,Sai got involved in similar relationships with other females living in other ashrams of the father-son duo,Janki alleged. She also told the police that Jamna had prevented her from meeting her husband on many occasions.

Fed-up,Janki started staying with her father Devraj Krishnani at Indore since 2008.

Janki’s lawyer D G Gujral said,“Janki had recorded her statements with the Surat police. We are also planning to file a police complaint of mental torture against Narayan Sai. We have decided to file the complaint before November 30,with Ahmedabad police or Indore police. We will also file an application before the court for DNA test of Narayan Sai’s son and also file a divorce application.”
