Kerala Govt hands over sealed cover to High Court

The sealed cover is understood to have names of police officers having criminal background.

Kerala Government today handed over to the High Court a sealed cover containing names of police officers having criminal background.

The cover,which is understood have the names of some IPS officers also,was handed over to a division bench comprising Justice Thothathil B Radhakrishanan and justice C T Ravikumar.

Kerala High court in September last year had expressed displeasure in a report filed by DGP Jacob Punnonose regarding criminalisation and criminal tendencies of police officers and directed him to file a ‘better report’.

In that report,DGP had pointed out 84 cases regarding criminal activities of police officials. The court then expressed surprise that the report could not identify a single officer against whom any criminal proceedings was initiated.

The bench then had also directed DGP to explain what had been done in the 84 cases said to be have been registered against the police personnel.

The sealed cover had been filed by the government on a batch of petitions by candidates who had completed police training,but were yet to be appointed in the force due to pending of criminal cases against them,came up before the court.

The case has been posted for orders on Tuesday.
