BJP MP Tarun VijayA demanded in Rajya Sabha on Monday that the Government take steps to restore the Sanskrit language to its lost glory, and open a Central University for its teaching and propagation.

The issue was raised in the Zero Hour, when Vijay said that Sanskrit was being neglected to the extent that its teaching is stopped at schools in classes 5 or 6. Furthermore,he stressed,CBSE is promoting Chinese,French and German, appealing that Sanskrit too be given its due importance.

Vijay cited remarks of first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, who said,”If I was asked what is the greatest treasure which India possesses and what is her finest heritage,I would answer unhesitatingly – it is the Sanskrit language and literature, and all that it contains. This is a magnificent inheritance, and so long as this endures and influences the life of our people, the basic genius of India will continue.”

Vijay lamented the widespread ignorance of the language. Stressing that even Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar wanted mother Sanskrit to have ‘Mother Tongue’ status,Vijay said it was a matter of concern that there were three central universities in India for Urdu,English and Hindi but none for Sanskrit.

Several members, including almost the entire BJP,associated themselves with the demand for setting up a central university for Sanskrit.
