Warning from Bhakra authorities today about release of excess water from the dam has prompted the Punjab government to increase vigil along the river and canal embankments in view of the monsoon.
The Bhakra Beas Management Board today said it had issued a warning for Punjab government about release of “excess” water into the Satluj and Beas rivers over the next few days as the water level in Bhakra dam had reached an all-time high.
In light of the warning,Punjab Irrigation Minister Janmeja Singh Sekhon has instructed all chief engineers to depute officers round the clock at sensitive places along the river and canal embankments.
Responding to BBMB’s charge that encroachments on the river beds of Satluj and Beas were responsible for restrictions to the free flow of water,Sekhon said: “Those are not encroachments at all… People have their own land in and around rivers and they have put up structures for animals,etc. However,we have asked them to remove their cattle and (protect their belongings) given the alert.”
The minister said that Punjab government has already set up a state-level flood control room which would work round the clock during the emergency situation.
District and sub-divisional level flood control rooms are also active,he added.
Sekhon said that he would visit all the drainage sites where flood works were on along with senior officials to take stock of the situation.
