Bengal chit fund scam: Rotten chilly in the basket will be removed, says Mamata

CM: There will be inquiry and whoever is found guilty, including my party members, will be punished.

Following allegations by CPM leader Gautam Deb that Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee was the managing director of a chit fund company, the Chief Minister on Thursday said that whoever is found guilty in the Saradha scam will be punished.

In her more than an hour-long speech at a public rally here,Mamata claimed that she had no relatives and after her mother’s death, she lived alone. Interestingly, her nephew and TMC Yuva national president Abhishek was seated on the stage along with other leaders.

“The rotten chilly in the basket will be removed. There can be 500 members in a family and party, and all of them may not be honest. There will be an inquiry and whoever is found guilty, including my party members, will be punished,” Mamata said.

Mamata then pulled out copies of several newspapers and magazines which had accepted advertisements of small savings company and had pictures of CPM leaders with the owners of these firms. She claimed that TMC’s newspaper Jago Bangla had never accepted advertisements from chit fund companies.

Regarding her party MP Kunal Ghosh, she said,“Kunal was only a salaried employee of the group and he never told me about the non-receipt of salary for the last three months.”

Mamata also rejected the allegation that on her recent trip from Delhi, she had boarded a plane chartered by the owner of a chit fund company. “Before boarding I had made sure that the money was paid to the company,” she said.
