Top Congress leaders in Kerala stayed away from the grand wedding ceremony of party colleague and former minister Adoor Prakash’s son with liquor baron Biju Ramesh’s daughter in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday evening. The eight-acre venue modelled after Akshardham Temple and Mysore Palace as well as news that there were 20,000 invitees had resulted in considerable buzz in the state which has been struggling for cash since the demonetisation on November 8.
The attendees included former Union minister Vayalar Ravi, PJ Kurien, former Kerala Assembly Speaker N Sakthan, former Kerala minister Aryadan Mohammad, former Kerala minister, Speaker and Andaman and Nicobar Lt Governor Vakkom Purushottaman and Tamil Nadu Minister S P Velu Mani. Incidentally, Biju Ramesh had contested the last Lok Sabha elections from Thiruvananthapuram as an AIADMK candidate. Vigilance DGP Jacob Thomas and Additional Chief Secretary Sheela Thomas were also present.
The alliance had raised eyebrows as it was Ramesh, chairman of Rajadhani Group and owner of scores of bars across Kerala, who had raised the bribery allegations against former finance minister and Kerala Congress supremo K M Mani in the previous UDF government in which Prakash was also a minister. As a result Mani quit as finance minister and his party exited the UDF.
A few months ago, state Congress chief V M Sudheeran had slammed former chief minister Oommen Chandy and senior leader Ramesh Chennithala for secretly attending the engagement function of the same couple. Sudheeran reminded them that Ramesh had landed the UDF government in a major crisis. Mani too criticised Chandy and Chennithala, claiming it substantiated his claims.
