Actor and CPI(M) MLA M Mukesh came under fire for chiding a class 10 student during a phone call, the recording of which has now gone viral.
The student, a native of Ottappalam in Palakkad district, had telephoned the MLA supposedly to request assistance for study materials. But Mukesh refused to listen to the request and scolded the student for telephoning him instead of the local MLA in Ottappalam. He was also miffed at the student for calling him six times while he was in a meeting.
“Isn’t your local MLA alive? You should have called him first, before calling me. If your friend recommended you to call me, then you must slap him. Why would he ask you to call an MLA from another district? You called me six times and I was sitting in a very important meeting. Is this child’s play? You’re being over-smart and you’re trying to disturb someone,” Mukesh is heard telling the student during the call.
“Do you even know who your MLA is?” the actor is heard asking. When the student replies in the negative, he scolds him further, “You are a class 10 student and you don’t know who your local MLA is. If you were standing before me right now, I would have caned you.”
After the recording went viral, the Kollam MLA appeared in a video posted on his social media account and said that such phone calls were a “ploy to harass him.” He alleged that hundreds of people were calling him in a day with the “silliest of problems” such as delays in trains and power issues, just to provoke him and get an angry outburst out of him. He also said that he would file a complaint with the cyber police.
Meanwhile, the student told reporters Monday that he had called Mukesh the other day with a genuine request for cell phones for online classes. “Since he’s an actor, I thought he would help me. That’s why I called him and recorded the call. He must have got angry after I called him six times. I don’t have any problems,” the student said.
A local CPM leader said the student belongs to a family of CPM sympathisers and is himself a member of the Balasangham, the party’s kids’ outfit.
According to PTI, the national coordinator of the Indian Youth Congress has also lodged a complaint to the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) against Mukesh for his remarks against the student.
In his complaint letter to the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights, J S Akhil has alleged that the CPI(M) Kollam MLA had “humiliated” and “threatened” the child.
