The recent death of a 17-year-old girl at a women’s Arabic college in Thiruvananthapuram rural district has snowballed into a controversy after her family alleged foul play. The teenager was found dead Saturday evening.
Earlier on Saturday, the girl had reportedly called her mother and asked her to take her back from the college hostel. Accordingly, the mother went to the institute but could not find her. Later, the hostel staff found the body of the girl at the library.
The police have registered a case of unnatural death and started a probe, following a complaint from the girl’s family.
A police officer said, “We have formed a special team to probe the case as it is the death of a minor girl. The post-mortem report indicated death by hanging. There is no indication of any sexual abuse or assault. The institute has a strict daily timetable and the girl was not reportedly happy to continue there.”
A relative of the girl alleged that she had faced torture at the institute, where visitors were allowed only once in a week. She has been an inmate of the college for the last one year. The girl had complained that the authorities at the institute were harsh towards her.
The death has sparked a campaign “for justice” on social media.
