Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Sunday sent congratulatory letters to US President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris for their victory in the US elections. India, Gandhi said, looks forward to a close partnership with the US under the leadership of Biden and Harris.

In her letter to Biden, Gandhi praised him for his stress on healing divisions among the people, promotion of gender and racial equality and sustainable development for all countries, saying the Indian people share these concerns.

“Like millions around the world, the Indian people have followed with great interest the course of the election during the last 12 months. We were greatly reassured by your measured speeches, stress on healing divisions among the people, and promotion of gender and racial equality, global cooperation and sustainable development of all countries,” she said.

“The Indian people share these concerns and we are confident that India and the United States will continue to work together, as in the past decades, for the welfare of the people of both countries,” she added.

The letter is interesting as the Congress, particularly former party chief Rahul Gandhi, had slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for virtually endorsing President Donald Trump’s re-election bid at the ‘Howdy Modi’ event in Texas last year. Rahul had Saturday tweeted congratulating both Biden and Harris, after news of their victory broke.

Sonia wrote to the President-elect that New Delhi and Washington have forged strong bonds over the years through cooperation in the fields of business, trade, education, technology and defence. “Under your wise and mature leadership, we look forward to a close partnership that will be beneficial to peace and development in our region and around the world,” she added.

In her letter to Harris, Sonia praised the “unwavering courage” with which she fought the elections and expressed the hope that the Vice President-elect will strengthen the friendship between US and India. Sonia also hailed Harris’ success as a “triumph for Black Americans and Indian Americans”.

“Your victory is a victory for the noble values enshrined in the American Constitution – democracy, social justice and racial and gender equality. It is a triumph for Black Americans and Indian Americans and for the humanity, compassion and inclusiveness that you have stood for throughout your public and political life. I admire the unwavering courage with which you have fought for your convictions — the beliefs and values you imbibed from your remarkable mother,” Sonia wrote.

As Vice President, Sonia said, she was sure that Harris “will work to heal and unite a bitterly divided nation, that you will strengthen the ties of friendship with India, and that you will support democratic values and human rights throughout the world.”

Sonia hoped Harris would soon visit India, where she said the senator of Indian descent will be warmly hailed, not just as a much-admired leader of a great democracy, but also as a beloved daughter.
