Adequate forces have been deployed in and around the village to maintain law and order, said Koderma Superintendent of Police Shivani Tiwari.

A man was injured when a mob allegedly assaulted him over suspicion of serving bovine meat at his son’s wedding reception in a village under Domchanch police station area of Koderma district in Jharkhand. The incident was reported on Tuesday. The police have arrested at least seven persons in this connection.

The police said that Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) has been clamped in the area to prevent any untoward incident. Officials, however, said that the situation has become normal, although prohibitory orders are in place as a matter of precaution.

According to the police, Jumman Miyan, a tailor in his 50s living in Nawadih village in Domchanch, had hosted a reception for his son on Monday night. On Tuesday morning, some persons in the village spotted meat parts of animal and raised alarm saying they have found meat parts of a bovine, which is banned in the state. The police were informed. In the mean time, a mob, comprising people from Nawadih and surrounding villages, gathered at the spot.

A police team, led by Domchanch officer-in-charge, reached the spot and tried to diffuse the situation. However, the mob became restive and targeted Jumman Miyan and also vandalised his house. A mike from a neighbouring worship place was also damaged. By the time additional forces arrived, the mob pelted stones and damaged several bikes, three four-wheelers and two autorickshaw parked in the street.

Koderma SP Shivani Tewary and Deputy Commissioner Bhuvanesh Pratap Singh rushed to the spot and camped till late to ensure situation was brought under control. The administration has also directed local officials to immediately start the relief measures in the affected homes.

Koderma SP Tewary said, “The situation has normalised since late last night. The person, who was referred to RIMS, has returned home. The mob had damaged some vehicles and resorted to vandalism. We have, so far, arrested seven persons.”

Tewary added that the charge of bovine meat being served was being investigated. “We have picked up some samples, including some hooves of an animal from the spot. A detailed examination is on. Meanwhile, we are identifying people with the help of video and photographic evidence. Further investigations are on”
