The Jammu Kashmir government said Monday that it intends to set up satellite townships in the Union Territory to meet housing needs and check unplanned expansion in urban areas.

In a written reply to a question by PDP’s Pulwama MLA Waheed-Ur-Rehman Para, the National Conference-led government it said the housing board has identified 1298.28 kanals (nearly 162 acres) of land at nine places across the UT.

This is apart from the 4,200 kanals (525 acres) of land identified by the development authorities of Srinagar and Jammu at various places. Land has been identified at Padgampora (Pulwama), Watapora (Bandipora), Bhalwal (Jammu), and Chatterhama (Srinagar), among other places.

Speaking to the media outside the Assembly, Para said the government’s admission about setting up satellite townships was contrary to an earlier statement of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah that no proposal was under consideration. The government should disclose who would be settled there since there are apprehensions of demographic changes and environmental disasters, he said.
