A CRPF personnel and a civilian were killed in a militant attack in North Kashmir’s Sopore on Wednesday morning. Three other CRPF personnel were injured in the attack and have been shifted to a hospital. A three-year-old boy was also rescued during the attack.
A Srinagar-based CRPF spokesperson said that the party came under attack in Sopore this morning. “Troops of G/179 CRPF along with JKP while placing NAKA were attacked by terrorists at 0735 hrs which was retaliated promptly,” the spokesperson said.
The family of the civilian, who was killed in the attack, alleged that the security forces pulled him out of his car and shot him. A CRPF spokesman, however, said the civilian was killed due to the firing by militants. “A civilian vehicle which was coming from Sopore to Kupwara was caught in the firing range of terrorists. An old man who was driving the vehicle stopped the car and got down from the vehicle to move away for a safe spot but got killed by terrorists firing. Later the young boy was rescued by SF who took position nearby.”
Sopore Police refuted the allegations. “The news surfaced on some social networking sites that the civilian was brought down and killed is totally baseless and is far beyond the facts, Sopore Police refutes and denies the news and legal action shall be initiated against the false reports and rumours,” it said on Twitter.
Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party (JKAP) also demanded an impartial probe in the civilian’s death. “The security forces should exercise maximum restraint in such situations and ensure that no collateral damage takes place during such incidents,” the JKAP spokesman observed.
Earlier on Friday, a CRPF constable and a five-year-old boy were killed in a militant attack in South Kashmir’s Bijbehara. A CRPF spokesperson had said that unknown militants on a two-wheeler fired upon the patrolling party of G/90 Battalion CRPF around noon. “One CT [constable] of 90 battalion CRPF sustained bullet injury & attained martyrdom,” he said. Meanwhile, in Tral, three Hizbul Mujahideen militants were killed by security forces, the police said. They said that no Hizb militants are now active in the area for the first time in decades.
In April, three Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) men were killed and two others were injured after unknown militants attacked a joint naka [checkpoint] of CRPF and J&K Police in North Kashmir’s Sopore.
