Shahbad Dairy murder
On 27 June, Sahil Khan (20), allegedly stabbed and killed his 16-year-old girlfriend in Shahbad Dairy in Delhi. The accused stabbed the minor at least 20 times until she died according to the police. Sahil, who fled after the murder, was arrested from Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh on Monday.
Bystanders and passersby who witnessed the incident purportedly did not make a PCR call for around 25-30 minutes as the body of the minor lay in a corner at the spot, in Shahbad dairy.
The Shahbad Dairy murder introduced the country to the ‘bystander effect’: a phenomenon in which people fail to offer needed help in emergencies, especially when other people are present in the same setting, according to the American Psychology Association (APA). Experts say that this phenomenon led to witnesses not informing the police for nearly 30 minutes.
Residents of the Shahbad Dairy where Sahil, lived knew him as a quiet, impatient man who frequently picked disputes with the neighbors over petty things.
