A youth was killed and four others were injured when members of two communities clashed at Bheetargaon village of Kanpur district on Sunday.
A police outpost, seven houses, three shops and a motorcycle were also set on fire during the clashes. While heavy stone pelting took place between two communities, no bullets were fired from either side, police said.
The violence was apparently the fallout of an August 22 incident in which two youths were beaten up for allegedly trying to steal from a house.
The police said on Sunday morning, a rumour spread that one of the youths had died. Following this a mob attacked the Bheetargaon police outpost.
They later set ablaze the house in which the theft occured. The deceased has been identified as Ejaz (25) who worked in a shop.
