You want to come back to Parliament but you do not allow the Parliament to function… I hope people are watching today’s proceedings. This is what an upset Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee told some members who were trying to raise some issues and in the process disrupting the Question Hour.
While NDA members from Punjab were trying to raise the issue of Mumbai-Delhi Dedicated Freight Corridor not being extended to Amritsar and some other matter,a CPI(M) member was demanding a discussion on some matter by suspending the Question Hour.
The Speaker repeatedly pleaded with the members to allow the Question Hour and the subsequent presentation of interim Rail Budget after which their matters could be raised.
This is the last session of 14th Lok Sabha. If you do not allow the Question Hour. I do not know you are serving the Parliament, Chatterjee said amid disruptions.
I can only say it is very very unfortunate. I do not know why this Parliament is there, why the elections are taking place, he said.
Taking a swipe at the members by telling them that they wanted to come back to Parliament despite not allowing the House to function, the Speaker said I will appeal to the leaders of all parties to decide if you do not want the House to continue.
As the members continued with their demands,Chatterjee said I am very sorry to say,you are showing utter lack of responsibility. This is absolute demeaning (of) the most important institution in this country. He added: Do you want to come here? Your people will see you shouting from there…. It seems that you are more concerned with creating some impressions somewhere else. I am not concerned about that.
Addressing cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu, who was among the NDA members who went to the Well of the House,Chatterjee said inspite of admiration that I have for you,you are not doing justice either to Parliament or to you.
When the members persisted with their demands stalling the proceedings for about 15 minutes, the Speaker lamented I think, you have already denigrated the image of this great institution for the last four and a half years.”
