A day after a suspended Chandigarh police constable shot dead two persons, including the husband of his girlfriend before abducting her, investigations revealed that the woman may have connived in the crime and then eloped with him.
Stepping up efforts to nab Basant alias Bunty, who shot dead the husband and mother-in-law of his girlfriend Sarita before abducting her,the Haryana Police Friday announced a cash reward of Rs 1 lakh on the suspended policemans arrest.
As per the police,Bunty hired a taxi (CH-01-AP-2303) from Manimajra in Chandigarh and on way picked a friend and reached Sonepat. After committing the gory crime, for which he got issued an official SLR (Self-loading-rifle) and 20 rounds of ammunition from Chandigarh Police Lines,Basant,Sarita and his friend along with the driver fled towards Uttar Pradesh. They threw the taxi driver out of the vehicle near Baghpat in UP and moved further.
The driver reached back and was detained by the Chandigarh police. Sources disclosed that the Chandigarh police has also initiated parallel investigations with the Haryana Police to locate the trio.
The investigations conducted by Haryana and Chandigarh police revealed that Sarita and Basant were in contact with each other on phone even after her marriage. The police teams are scrutinising their call details. Sarita had allegedly intoxicated her uncle and aunt in Rohtaks Sampla area and eloped with Basant on March 26 - the day when Basant went absent without official leave from duty in Chandigarh Police.
After Sarita allegedly eloped with Basant, her family tried to lodge a complaint with the police, but no case was registered. Finally, her family members traced her to Chandigarh and after bringing her back to Sonepat and got her married to Sandeep on April 16.
While talking to Express ,Rakam Singh,DSP (Headquarters),Sonepat, said,The preliminary investigations have revealed that Sarita eloped with Basant. Once we arrest them,it would be clear if she connived with Basant in commission of the brutal murders.
Chandigarh police Friday booked Basant on charges of cheating and criminal breach of trust besides booking him under various provisions of Arms Act,on the complaint of Inspector,Police Lines.
Meanwhile,Chandigarh Police has placed three personnel including Constable Maninder Singh,Head Constable Dilip and Sub Inspector Sukhdev Singh on charges of dereliction of duty. Constable Maninder Singh of Armoury unit, was the one who issued SLR and ammunition to Constable Basant Thursday morning. Basant,in uniform, approached Maninder and told him that he needs his SLR and ammunition because he has to produce some undertrials in the court. Maninder, without checking the record, issued the weapon and ammunition to him. HC Dilip and SI Sukhdev Singh have been suspended for failing to detect the lapse.
Even though Basant was absent without leave, the Chandigarh Police did not make any effort to trace him. No team was sent to his native village in Sonepat to look for him.
