The Congress government headed by Tarun Gogoi has chalked out a plan to make Assam free of child marriages within the next few years.
A new legislation would be introduced to put an end to child marriages in the state, he said. Reviewing the current status of child rights violation including child marriages and child labour, Gogoi said his government has already tied up with Nobel winner Kailash Satyarthi to conduct a survey of child rights violations in the state soon.
Assam incidentally has the highest infant mortality rate in the country. “Assam has to become free of child marriage as early as possible, and stricter laws have to be enacted to put a full stop to child marriage,” he said.
