Backtracking from its earlier announcement of fielding a candidate against Congress’ Lok Sabha member Priya Dutt,Samajwadi Party on Thursday said it will ‘not do anything’ against her.

“Priya Dutt is Sunil Dutt’s daughter. Sunil Dutt was like a brother to us. We will not do anything against Sunil Dutt’s daughter,” SP general secretary Amar Singh told reporters outside Parliament in New Delhi.

Interestingly,Singh while addressing a press conference in Mumbai on Wednesday had announced the SP will field its Mumbai unit president Abu Asim Azmi against Priya Dutt from Mumbai North-West constituency.

The announcement assumed significance in the backdrop of Priya’s opposition to her brother Sanjay Dutt’s decision to contest Lok Sabha election on Samajwadi Party ticket.

Making a different statement on Thursday,Singh said,”What ever be the future or present of our relationships with Congress,we will not do anything against Sunil Dutt’s daughter.”

The SP leader also indicated that his party would work towards doing away hurdles from Priya Dutt’s path.
