With the state polls looming,Vidarbha is gearing up for some high-profile visits, including by Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan,NCP president and Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar and Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi.
While the CM is visiting Nagpur on Tuesday to address booth-level workers,Pawar will tour six rain-hit districts from September 14 to 16.
Pawar will come to Akola on September 14 and tour Washim,Wardha,Yavatmal,Gondia,Bhandara and Nagpur districts over the next three days before leaving for Indore on September 16. He last came to the region in January this year on a three-day visit.
During his tour,Pawar will also meet some of the district collectors in the region.
NCP has poor presence in the region. Praful Patel, who represents Bhandara-Gondia Lok Sabha constituency,is the partys lone MP in the region.
Nagpur Congress chief Jaiprakash Gupta confirmed Rahuls visit but said no dates had been finalised as yet. Rahul is likely to stay for two days. It was learnt that he will visit some of the rain-hit districts.
Rahul had last visited Vidarbha in 2008,when he met Kalavati and Shashikala, widows of farmers in two Yavatmal villages.
Recently,MPs from Vidarbha and MPCC chief Manikrao Thakre had met the Union agriculture minister and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to apprise them of the situation in the flood-hit region, which saw over 300 deaths and widespread damage to agriculture, livestock and private properties. They had sought Rs 2,000 crore in Central aid apart from the Rs 2,000 crore that the state government is providing.
Meanwhile,a Central team is also visiting the region on September 11 and 12 to assess the agricultural damage.
