Veteran Congress leader Maderna dies

The 88-year-old Jat leader breathed his last at 6 am at SMS Hospital.

Senior Congress leader and former Speaker of Rajasthan Assembly, Parasram Maderna, died here Sunday morning following respiratory failure.

The 88-year-old Jat leader breathed his last at 6 am at SMS Hospital where was admitted recently after he complained of swelling in his legs and stomach. He was suffering from diabetes, osteoarthritis and septicaemia.

His elder son and former Congress minister, Mahipal Maderna, who is in jail in connection with Bhanwari Devi’s murder case, was given interim bail to attend to his ailing father by a court on February 12.

Born on July 23, 1926, Maderna was associated with agrarian movement in early days of his political career.
A nine-time MLA, Ma-derna represented Bhopalgarh and Osiyan constituencies in Jodhpur district between 1957 and 2003.

He also held portfolios like revenue, panchayati raj, cooperative, forest, agriculture as a minister in Rajasthan government. Maderna was Speaker of Rajasthan Assembly from 1999 to 2004, and state Congress president from 1989-94.
His funeral is expected tomorrow at his native village.
