The Uttarakhand government on Sunday passed a resolution requesting the Centre to withdraw its notification for creation of a Eco Sensitive Zone (ESZ) in Uttarkashi district. The Cabinet has also decided to call an all-party meeting over the ESZ issue.
The Centre had on December 18, 2012, declared the watershed of a stretch of the river Bhagirathi — running from 100 km Gaumukh to Uttarkashi and spanning 4979.59 sq km — as an Eco Sensitive Zone (ESZ).
“We want the Centre to scrap this ESZ,” Chief Minister Harish Rawat told reporters after the Cabinet meeting. He said a delegation from the state will soon meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister of Environment, Forests and Climate Change Prakash Javadekar.
In its notification, the Centre had asked the state government to prepare a Zonal Master Plan for proper development of the area under the new guidelines for ESZ. However, the state has so far not prepared the Master Plan.
