A migrant labourer hailing from a village in Sultanpur district of Uttar Pradesh “killed” his two daughters aged about 10 month old and three-year, by drowning them into a tube well water reservoir in Jasra Ur village near Ajnala in Amritsar district in Punjab in the wee hours on Monday.
35-year-old Ram Anand allegedly drowned his 10-month-old daughter Bhumati and three-year-old Gudiya at about 4 am on Monday in a small tube well water reservoir. The girls died in the water due to asphyxiation.
Anand later consumed a poisonous substance and was rushed to Guru Nanak Dev Hospital in Amritsar for treatment.
Mother of the girls, according to her husband Anand, was a “retarded woman and died few days back”.
His statement was recorded by the police on Monday evening after hospital authorities informed that he gained some consciousness.
“I dropped them in the water and waited for 15-minutes. By that time, both were dead. I took them out, wore them the clothes and put their bodies at a langar shed nearby,” Anand told The Indian Express from the hospital bed in a choked voice. “The younger one was to turn one in two months,” he added.
A doctor who attended to him said though the poison from Anand’s body had been flushed out, but “next 48 hours are very crucial for him”. A case of murder was registered against him.
Anand told that on Sunday he went to an orphanage in Amritsar with a request that his daughters be kept there. “I told them that I would pay whatever amount I could and when I would be in a position I would take them back with me. But, the orphanage people turned down my request telling me to take care of children as I was their father. They told me that they only take children who did not have the parents,” Anand said, tears rolling down his eyes.
“I woke up at 4 am. And they (daughters) also woke up. I removed their clothes and took them to water reservoir and dropped them inside,” said Anand, adding that even the parents of his wife had refused to keep the girls with them after the death of his wife.
“Anand had procured the poison and told that he had decided that when police would be taking away the bodies of his daughters, he would consume the poison,” said Investigating Official Assistant Sub Inspector Jagbir Singh who recorded his statement.
“He was hiding nearby and keeping a watch and after a village chowkidar noticed the bodies of the girl and informed the police, he consumed the poison,” said Jagbir, adding that wife of Ram Anand was “mentally retarded who used to eat even cow dung and other waste”.
Amritsar (Rural) Senior Superintendent of Police Jasdeep Singh told that a villager had brought Ram Anand to the village from Amritsar Railway station about three months back and later Ram Anand brought his family to live with him. “At present, he was doing odd labour jobs,” said the SSP.
