The Congress’s attempt to be seen as fighting corruption by bringing legislation and instituting a Lokpal has run into complications, with Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj deciding to go to President Pranab Mukherjee to protest against Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s reluctance to nominate a consensus nominee to the selection panel for the Lokpal.

A meeting of ex-officio members of the committee on Monday approved the nomination of senior lawyer P P Rao to the panel, overruling Swaraj’s objection by a majority of 3-1. The Prime Minister, Speaker, and a nominee of the Chief Justice of India are the other ex-officio members of the selection committee.    “Prime Minister suggested the name of P P Rao. I voiced my disagreement as he is too much identified with the Congress. I suggested that let us have someone neutral with stature as the fifth member of the panel. Since the country has waited for over 40 years, our first step (in picking the Lokpal) should instill faith in the common public,” Swaraj  told reporters on Tuesday.
