A Special Investigation Cell (SIC) was formed on Tuesday by the Uttar Pradesh government to probe the recent riots in Muzaffarnagar that left 49 people dead.
Superintendent of Police (Crime) Muzaffarnagar Kavita Saxena will lead the SIC,said IG (Law and Order) R K Vishwakarma.
As many as 29 experienced officers will investigate 106 cases in connection with the riots. “The IOs selected for the purpose are the ones who have a good experience in such matters,” Vishwakarma said.
Though the government had earlier stated around 80 cases were registered in connection with the violence,Vishwakarma said that more than one case had been registered in some incidents,”following which the total number of cases can go up”.
The SIC will also have two officers of the rank of Additional Superintendent of Police,three Deputy Superintendents of Police and 20 inspectors/sub-inspectors,Principal Secretary,Home,R M Srivastava said here.
DIG,Saharanpur,and IG,Meerut,will monitor the probe being carried out by this cell,Srivastava said.
The thrust will be on carrying out the investigation in a scientific manner using all the required scientific methods,he said.
Communal clashes in Muzaffarnagar and its adjoining areas claimed 49 lives and left thousands of others homeless.
