In an irony of sorts,Akali workers and Punjab Police personnel were seen clashing with unemployed linemen and their family members during the SAD conference at Talwandi Sabo even as Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal announced that his government was duty bound to preserve the hard earned peace in Punjab.
The single point agenda of the state government was to ensure peace, brotherhood and communal harmony in the state for its all-round development, Badal said even as the SAD conference was once marred by protests by the unemployed linemen.
Members belonging to the Unemployed Linemen Association started raising slogans the moment Chief Minister started his speech. The police force present on the spot later dragged them out of the conference hall, where most claimed that they were manhandled. About 185 unemployed linemen, including women and children, were taken to police station but no FIR was registered till the filing of this report.
Badal termed the incident as a conspiracy by the Congress. Keep listening to me. These men have been sent by the Congress to spoil our show, Badal told the gathering.
Creating traffic jams, stopping rails and sitting on dharnas in order to get your demands fulfilled is not justified. The demands of these linemen are not genuine. A number of them are very old and cannot even walk, let alone climb the electric poles to work as linemen, he added.
It may be mentioned that Punjab government had advertised 5,000 posts of linemen in January 2011,but only 1,000 men were appointed. On February 2013,the court said that there is no ban on recruitment, but still appointment letters are not being issued, alleged Jagdeep Singh, the union leader.
Two days back also 13 linemen were arrested when they disrupted CMs speech in Bathinda while 59 were earlier arrested in Muktsar Maghi Mela.
Earlier,Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal lashed out at the Punjab Congress chief Partap Singh Bajwa for his recent comments targeting the state government. Bajwa has wrong impression about his popularity,he said. In coming months, the complete overhaul of the irrigation system of the state would take place,Sukhbir said
Badal son, bahu get special mention at SAD show
Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal was all praise for Bathinda MP Harsimrat Kaur. People call her my Bahu, but I consider her my daughter and I am proud of her. I hear of her good work from all across the country, wherever I go. Last time, you made her victorious with the biggest margin. This time increase the margin even more, Badal said, making it clear that Harsimrat remains the party choice for Bathinda Lok sabha seat.
The Chief Minister also said that his son Sukhbir will plan the strategy for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. He said the strategy has already been finalised during the Goa Chintan Shivar. He also clarified that party will back the BJP nominee for the prime ministerial post.
