Under-trial contesting polls in Valley from Tihar jail

A Kashmiri under-trial in Tihar jail is contesting Lok Sabha election from Baramulla Parliamentary seat in North Kashmir,his second bid in the past four months.

A Kashmiri under-trial in Tihar jail is contesting Lok Sabha election from Baramulla Parliamentary seat in North Kashmir,his second bid in the past four months. Earlier Iqbal Jan unsuccessfully contested the assembly election from Bandipore constituency.

31 year old Iqbal Jan’s nomination paper was filed at the office of the Deputy Commissioner by his cousin Bilal Ahmad Dar of Sopore who was accompanied by Jan’s sister Shamima. Iqbal filed the nomination papers on Panther’s party’s ticket.

“Iqbal is fighting elections as he hopes that success in the poll will facilitate his release from the jail,” said Dar. “Iqbal had taken the oath at the Tihar jail with Superintendent jails which is mandatory for any under trial before filing the nominations.”

The Information Officer Baramulla,Riyaz Ahmed confirmed that the Returning Officer Baramulla had received the nomination of Iqbal Jan. “It will now face the scrutiny,along with other nomination under rules,” he said.

Iqbal Jan,a businessman from Sonarwani Bandipore was arrested on charges for working as conduit for militants by the Delhi police on November 16,2006. The police had claimed to have recovered around Rs 5 lakh and a cache of RDX from him,the allegation vehemently denied by his family.

“He is innocent. Every one knows it. We knocked everybody’s door for his release but without any result,” said the relative. “And Delhi is a difficult place for an ordinary Kashmiri to get audience and the whole family hopes that through the election we will be able to free our brother.”

Iqbal Jan,only bread earner of the family,has five young sisters and their father has passed away. In the just concluded Assembly polls,Jan had incidentally become the first Kashmiri to fight elections from jail.

Meanwhile,on the last date of filing of nomination papers for Baramulla-Kupwara Parliamentary Constituency on Friday,nine more candidates filed their nomination papers taking the total number of candidates from this constituency up to 23.

The prominent candidates contesting include separatist Sajad Lone,National Conference’s Sharif Din Shariq,PDP’s Dilwar Mir and militant commander turned politician Imran Rahi.
